“I love helping folks new to our community get connected! Tell me where you live and what you’re in recovery from…and I usually know someone close by with whom you can connect!
— Sarah Schmidt, SHE RECOVERS Together volunteer Facebook group administrator

Sarah Schmidt is a Facebook group guardian, a queen of connecting folx, and a champion of our Food & Body Neutrality Philosophy, amongst so many other things. She has been volunteering for the SHE RECOVERS Foundation since 2020 and has always worked so hard for our community. In our spaces, Sarah is curious, kind, welcoming, and supportive. Sarah always has time for newcomers and inspires us all to find room for self-compassion and self-forgiveness in our recovery.

SHE RECOVERS Gems are volunteers who have been acknowledged by their peers for their profound and life-altering contributions and service to our community.

We had the honor of interviewing Sarah Schmidt about her role as a SHE RECOVERS volunteer.

What does being a SHE RECOVERS Foundation volunteer mean to you?

It means a lot to me. In my addiction, I was so unreliable. When I became a Zoom gathering cohost in 2020, I was trusted to show up on time and to start the meeting—that meant so much to me, to be trusted. Now, I’m a Facebook group guardian, and I’m trusted to co-create a welcoming and supportive space—that is such an honor to me!

What made you want to become a SHE RECOVERS Foundation volunteer?

I loved SHE RECOVERS so much, and I wanted to give back to the community. Now in my recovery, I have boatloads of free time and not boatloads of money, so I volunteer a lot and donate a small-ish amount monthly as part of the SHE RECOVERS RISE Collective

What three words would your friends and peers use to describe you?

Funny, thoughtful, connected.

How do these aspects of who you are show up in your everyday life?

I love helping folks new to our community get connected! Tell me where you live and what you’re in recovery from…and I usually know someone close by with whom you can connect!

What is something of which you are proud?

My recovery! I had a very low bottom at the end of my addiction. The fact that I’m alive, recovering, setting goals, and attaining them is incredible! I’m even meeting my financial goals, which I could never reach in my active addiction.

What do you do outside of your volunteer role for work and/or play?

I have a newfound obsession—Diamond Dotz! It’s my first sober hobby.

What does radical self-care look like for you?

Annual SHE RECOVERS Retreats. Daily connection with my peeps. Joyful movement. Intuitive Eating. Monthly massages. Lots of rest.

Tell us a little bit about your recovery journey. What are you recovering from?

Alcohol, drugs, anxiety, depression, trauma, and an eating disorder.

What or who is inspiring you right now?

Women who are fierce advocates for their communities’ needs. Women of color advocating for more inclusive recovery spaces. Leaders in the body liberation movement.

What SHE RECOVERS Intention and Guiding Principle resonates with you the most?

We must be supported to find & follow individualized pathways & patchworks of recovery.

What is your favorite SHE RECOVERS resource?

The twice-daily Zoom meetings! I was loved and learned to love myself in those Zoom squares. I have met so many life-long friends there.

What is one piece of advice you would give to another woman/non-binary individual who is seeking a community like SHE RECOVERS?

Join us! Recovery is so much better with a loving and supportive community!
