Addressing Spiritual Abuse and Religious Trauma in Recovery
#MentalHealthMonday Recovery Education Session

With Dr. Jamie Marich

Spiritual abuse is whenever God or any other spiritual construct or idea is used as a weapon by those in power to control, demean, or manipulate others.

This form of abuse can happen as religious trauma in specifically religious settings, or it can happen in forums that we identify as more holistic, such as yoga or meditation communities, or in recovery fellowships.

In this presentation, we will further explore this working definition and examine how unhealed wounds of this nature can be a barrier to engaging meaningfully in recovery. This #MentalHealthMonday is a come-as-you-are experience where you are encouraged to ask questions, and no one right path of recovery is favored.

During this recovery education session, Dr. Marich will:

  • Define spiritual abuse and identify how it may show up in life
  • Explain how to create intentions or goals for the healthiest possible recovery—whether that includes a spiritual approach or not
  • Name characteristics of healthy and nourishing spirituality

Join us LIVE for a Q & A session following the presentation.

ABOUT JAMIE MARICH, PHD, LPCC-S, REAT, RYT-500, RMT
Dr. Jamie Marich (she/they) inspires people and systems to heal the wounds that keep them stuck, allowing for authentic transformation free of shame and stigma. A TEDx speaker, clinical trauma specialist, expressive artist, lay spiritual director, author, short filmmaker, Reiki master, yoga teacher, and recovery advocate, she unites all of these elements in her mission to redefine therapy. As the founder of the Institute for Creative Mindfulness and the developer of the Dancing Mindfulness approach to expressive arts therapy, her work on Dancing Mindfulness has been featured in the New York Times. She is also a woman in long-term recovery from an addictive disorder and lives with dissociative identities.

As a queer woman who survived multiple spiritually abusive experiences in childhood and adulthood, Jamie is passionate about helping people to recognize where religion and spirituality may be causing harm in their lives so that they can chart a course for personalized healing.

Her personal story of being out as a clinical professional with a dissociative disorder was published by The Huffington Post earlier in 2023. The Association of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Addiction Professionals and Their Allies and the EMDR International Association have given her awards for her advocacy work in both jurisdictions.

She is also the author of several books including Trauma and the 12 Steps and Dissociation Made Simple: A Stigma-Free Guide to Embracing Your Dissociative Mind and Navigating Life—her memoir about surviving spiritual abuse, called You Lied to Me About God, is due to be released in October of this year.
