Why Yoga for Recovery?


Yoga is important because – as we state in one of our SHE RECOVERS Intentions & Guiding Principles – “Recovery is a journey to wholeness – we take care of our mind, body and spirit.”

In the west, we have become really good at addressing the mind and spirit when someone is on a path of recovery (talk therapy, 12 step programs, etc.),  and those are wonderful approaches but they don’t address the body.

We can talk about a traumatic experience – over and over and over again – and it will can help tremendously. But, unless we release the the experience from the body, illness, chronic fatigue, dis-ease, autoimmune disorders may manifest. We also need to heal the body from the stress we put in through prior to recovery.

Hi! I’m Taryn.

I am in recovery from substance use disorder, trauma, disordered eating, self- harm, codependency and all of the things that came with those things; shame, low self- worth, and low self- esteem.

Today, I know, for a fact, that I have been through everything I have been through – every heartbreak, addiction, trauma, insecurity – to bring me to exactly where I am in this moment. I am the co-founder of SHE RECOVERS (with my mama, Dawn Nickel), a Trauma Informed Yoga instructor, dōTERRA Wellness Advocate and currently completing my Recovery Coach training. I have led over 20 yoga for recovery retreats, presented at several Yoga conferences, and have co-taught alongside Elena Brower. More recently, I’ve started teaching SHE RECOVERS Yoga at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health and am creating a SHE RECOVERS Yoga Teacher Training  Program.

Recovery has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a “12 step home” and I am in recovery myself (not 12 step.) Using movement as a form of therapy has also been a part of my life for as along as I can remember – I started dancing at the age of 3.

I always knew that I wanted to work in the recovery field. At age 18, right after high school, I took a course which was an introduction to becoming an Addiction Therapist. The content wasn’t resonating – so, I moved onto the next career choice on my list – makeup artist! What I loved about being a makeup artist was the confidence I would see in the women at the end of our appointment. All day, everyday, I was helping women (and men!) feel more confident and powerful. The clients who sat in my chair whom had little – or no – self esteem really affected me. I made it my responsibility to make sure they felt heard, seen, confident and beautiful during our time together. Looking back, I was acting as a bit of a coach during those appointments! Some days, I struggled with the “vanity” of the industry, but today I say, if a little (or a lot) of mascara and lipgloss assists in someone feeling like a badass – RIGHT ON, GO FOR IT.

Yoga came into my life during an extremely difficult time – mom had cancer, so my sister and I moved provinces to be with her. We were young, scared, didn’t know anyone and didn’t have jobs. I went to my first class for physical reasons – dancing was too hard on my body and I figured yoga would be a nice alternative. The emotional and mental benefits I received from my first class – freaked me out, to be honest. I was not expecting to I leave class full of gratitude and hope. I didn’t think they were possible to cultivate during such an uncertain time in my life. I immediately started volunteering my time at the front desk of the studio in exchange for free yoga classes.

I realized I had found the avenue to work with people in recovery that resonated with me, so I took my first 300 hour yoga teacher training at Moksana Yoga in 2007. At that time, I was looking for resources, trainings and literature about the profound benefits of adding yoga to a recovery toolbox, as well as the similarities between 12 step and yoga philosophies. I could not find anything on the subject! I realized that I was going to have to develop my own style of teaching to those in recovery. I started volunteer teaching at the local detox facility – and learned a lot about teaching trauma informed yoga – through trial and error. Luckily, in 2011 Durga Lee was offering (and I received) a Yoga of Recovery Certification at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram. In 2014, I attended one of the most important trainings I have ever attended, “Yoga for Mental Health and Trauma” with Nicole Marcia.
