Recognizing Maria Engel as a SHE RECOVERS Gem

SHE RECOVERS® Foundation Volunteer Recognition

SHE RECOVERS GEM Maria Engel

“SHE RECOVERS changed my life and has become a huge part of my daily life.” — Maria Engel, SHE RECOVERS Together Online Volunteer Host

Maria Engel (she/her) is a SHE RECOVERS Together Online Zoom Gathering Volunteer Host and serves and safeguards our community by holding space and helping steward our meetings. She has been volunteering with the Foundation for three years, and is quick to come forward to support her fellow volunteers and folks in our spaces. Her nominator says that she deserves a gold medal for her commitment, care, and dedication to SHE RECOVERS. We appreciate her generosity of spirit!

She has recently been recognized as a SHE RECOVERS Gem.

SHE RECOVERS Gems are volunteers who have been acknowledged by their peers for their profound and life-altering contributions and service to our community.

We had the honor of interviewing Maria Engel about her role as a SHE RECOVERS volunteer.

What does being a SHE RECOVERS Foundation volunteer mean to you?

I’m so happy to help SHE RECOVERS with anything, and I love being able to welcome newcomers and share how great SHE RECOVERS is.

What made you want to become a SHE RECOVERS Foundation Volunteer?

SHE RECOVERS changed my life and has become a huge part of my daily life. I am so happy to be able to give back.

What three words would your friends and peers use to describe you?

Friendly, funny & welcoming.

How do these aspects of who you are show up in your everyday life?

I love laughing and making others laugh. I also tend to be outgoing (often oversharing) with friends and family!

What is something of which you are proud?

I’m proud of my family.

What do you do outside of your SRF Volunteer role for work and/or play?

Spend time with family, explore new places to eat, watch 80s/90s TV and movies, and all things early childhood education.

What does radical self-care look like for you?

Doing things for myself and NOT feeling guilty about it.

Tell us a little bit about your recovery journey. What are you recovering from? What tools and resources do you weave into your patchwork of recovery?

I’m in recovery from alcohol. I started getting sober curious during the pandemic and started reading quit lit. I joined some online groups and was prescribed medication as treatment. When I found SHE RECOVERS, I loved the coaches and the meetings.

What or who is inspiring you right now?

All my SHE RECOVERS sisters who keep coming to meetings when things are good, bad, and ugly.

What SHE RECOVERS Intention and Guiding Principle resonates with you the most?

We are all recovering from something.

What is your favorite SHE RECOVERS resource?

The number of women I can reach out to for support.

What is one piece of advice you would give to another woman/non-binary individual who is seeking a community like SHE RECOVERS?
